No-Hands Scarf Carry
Students travel around the space carrying a scarf balanced on different body parts, such as the head, shoulder, back or knee, without holding it with their hands. It builds postural control, body-part awareness and a gentle warm-up.
How to play
- Each student places a scarf on their head and walks freely around the gym without letting it fall (1 min).
- Change the body part every minute: shoulder, back of the hand, back while bear-crawling, top of the foot (4 min).
- Gradually speed up: from walking to an easy jog to sliding sideways.
- If the scarf falls, the student does two jumping jacks, picks it up and keeps going.
- In pairs: carry one scarf between your two foreheads or shoulders, no hands, to a cone 30 feet away and back (2 min).
- Finish: on the signal, everyone freezes like a statue with the scarf on a body part of their choice (1 min).
Rules
- Hands may not touch the scarf while you are moving.
- Look ahead to avoid bumping into classmates.
- When crawling, move slowly and never cut in front of anyone.
- No one is out: a dropped scarf comes back after the quick challenge.
Variations
Easier
Walk slowly and carry the scarf only on the head or shoulder.
Standard
Change body parts every minute and increase speed.
Harder
Carry two scarves at once on different body parts.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: carry the scarf on the lap, arm or shoulder while moving in the wheelchair.
- Hearing impairment: point to the body part to use instead of only calling it out.
- Fitness level: students needing more intensity jog; those needing less walk with long strides.
Learning goals
- Keep a steady posture while traveling.
- Identify and name different body parts.
- Warm up the body gradually.
Equipment for a class of 25
- scarves: 25
Teacher tip
Name the body part while pointing to it on yourself: it reinforces body vocabulary for younger students. On windy days, cotton scarves blow away less than silky ones.

A dynamic version of Blind Man's Bluff in which a guide uses only their voice to lead a blindfolded partner to tag classmates moving inside a small area.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise.
Animal Races
Students move around the space imitating different animals: bear walks, frog jumps, crab walks, and kangaroo hops, with short races between lines.
Around the World
Different areas of the playground become continents, and students travel between them using the locomotor move the teacher calls out.
Balance Pose Challenge
Students hold balance poses alone, then in pairs and small groups with a limited number of body parts touching the floor.
Balance the Pole on Your Palm
Each student tries to balance a pole upright on the palm of the hand, first standing still and then walking, switching hands and heights.
