Mystery Touch Bag
In small seated groups, students reach into an opaque cloth bag and, using only touch, describe and guess the object or texture they feel. It's a calm sensory game that relaxes students after exercise and builds tactile perception and vocabulary.
How to play
- Make 5 seated circles of 5; each group gets a cloth bag with 5 objects of different textures (sponge, pine cone, spiky ball, piece of fine sandpaper, feather, bottle cap) (1 min).
- Taking turns, each child puts one hand in the bag without looking, picks an object and explores it for 15 seconds.
- Without pulling it out, they describe it using touch words: smooth, rough, cold, squishy, prickly, light… (20 sec).
- The group tries to guess the object; then it's taken out, checked and the bag is passed to the student on the right (4 min).
- Once everyone has had a turn, groups swap bags clockwise and play a faster guessing-only round (2 min).
- To finish, each group picks its favorite texture and passes it hand to hand with eyes closed (1 min).
Rules
- No peeking inside the bag.
- Handle objects gently without squeezing or breaking them.
- Respect each classmate's turn and don't grab the bag.
- Speak quietly, and only the describer talks.
Variations
Easier
Use very familiar objects (ball, spoon, comb) and show pictures of them first.
Standard
Students describe textures with touch words and the group guesses the object.
Harder
Students must find, inside the bag, the object a classmate names without pulling out the others.
Adaptations
- Limited hand mobility: a partner holds the object against the student's palm or forearm to explore it.
- Touch sensitivity or autism: tell the student what's in the bag ahead of time and let them skip objects they dislike.
- Visual impairment: this activity is a great fit; the student can act as the expert who helps others describe.
Learning goals
- Develop tactile perception without relying on sight.
- Expand vocabulary for describing sensations.
- Recognize and express which textures feel pleasant or unpleasant.
Equipment for a class of 25
- assorted textures: 25
- cloth bags: 5
Teacher tip
Check that no object has sharp points or edges. Prepare the bags ahead of time and save them for other lessons, swapping one object each time.
