Music-Guided Ball Massage
In pairs, one student lies down and the other gives a tennis ball massage whose movement changes with the music: long notes mean long strokes, bouncy music means light taps and a pause means still hands. It relaxes the muscles and builds musical listening and the ability to match movement to rhythm.
How to play
- Set up pairs with one yoga mat and one tennis ball; one partner lies face down, forehead resting on hands (1 min).
- Explain the code: slow music = long strokes of the ball over the back; fast or bouncy music = light taps with the ball; silence = the ball stops and the hand rests on the back.
- The teacher plays a 3-minute mix alternating 30-second clips of each type; the massager adjusts the movement to what they hear (3 min).
- Switch roles and repeat with the same mix (3 min).
- To finish, both partners sit up, quietly share which part they liked best and take two breaths together (1 min).
Rules
- The ball never goes over the head, neck or directly on the spine.
- Taps are gentle, never hits.
- Respect what your partner asks for: softer, a different area or stop.
- Talk only at the end, and quietly.
Variations
Easier
Use only two types: slow music (strokes) and silence (still hand).
Standard
Alternate slow music, bouncy music and silence in 30-second clips.
Harder
The massager also matches the exact tempo of the music and changes body area at every clip change.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student receives the massage seated in a wheelchair, on the shoulders and arms.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher holds up a colored card at each music change so the massager can see it.
- Touch sensitivity or autism: the student may receive the massage on arms and hands only, or just give the massage.
Learning goals
- Relax the back and shoulders with a gentle massage.
- Match movement to the mood and rhythm of the music.
- Take care of a partner and communicate respectfully.

Teacher tip
Put the music mix together before class, with clear changes and no lyrics. Circulate among pairs to adjust pressure and remind students of off-limits areas.
