Move to the Hand Drum Beat
The teacher plays different rhythms on a hand drum and students change how they travel: slow beats to walk, fast beats to run, uneven beats to gallop and silence to freeze. It builds rhythm, listening skills and speed control.
How to play
- Students spread out across the gym and the teacher stands where everyone can see the drum (30 s).
- Slow, steady beats: walk, stepping on every beat (1 min).
- Fast beats: jog to the rhythm; when the drum stops, everyone freezes like a statue (2 min).
- Long-short rhythm: gallop sideways or like horses (90 s).
- Shaking the drum without hitting it: make small, shivery movements in place as if it were cold (1 min).
- Finish: the teacher mixes rhythms without warning and the class switches movements right away (2 min).
Rules
- When the drum goes quiet, everyone freezes.
- Change direction without collisions, moving into open space.
- Listen before you move: the beat is the boss.
- No one is out for mistakes; adjust and keep going.
Variations
Easier
Use only two rhythms: slow to walk and fast to jog.
Standard
Four rhythms with statue freezes.
Harder
A student plays the drum and the class follows; rotate the drummer every minute.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: follow the rhythms with the wheelchair or with claps and arm movements.
- Hearing impairment: the student stays near the drum to feel the vibration, and the beat is paired with large gestures.
- Fitness level: during fast beats, students who need it jog in place instead of traveling.
Learning goals
- Adjust locomotor movements to different rhythms.
- Develop active listening and attention.
- Control starting and stopping movement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hand drum: 1
Teacher tip
If you have no drum, rhythm sticks or loud claps work fine. Link each rhythm to an animal, like turtle, cheetah or horse, to help younger students remember.

Active Blind Man's Bluff
A dynamic version of Blind Man's Bluff in which a guide uses only their voice to lead a blindfolded partner to tag classmates moving inside a small area.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise.
Animal Races
Students move around the space imitating different animals: bear walks, frog jumps, crab walks, and kangaroo hops, with short races between lines.
Around the World
Different areas of the playground become continents, and students travel between them using the locomotor move the teacher calls out.
Balance Pose Challenge
Students hold balance poses alone, then in pairs and small groups with a limited number of body parts touching the floor.
Balance the Pole on Your Palm
Each student tries to balance a pole upright on the palm of the hand, first standing still and then walking, switching hands and heights.
