Metronome Cadence Running Warm-Up
A running warm-up where students calculate their step cadence and match it to a metronome beep played through a speaker, moving up from 160 to 180 steps per minute. They improve running economy and reduce impact with shorter steps and landings under the hips.
How to play
- Mark a rectangular loop of about 110 yards with cones and jog freely for 2 minutes.
- Count (1 minute): each student counts right-foot contacts for 15 seconds at their normal pace and multiplies by 8 to get their cadence in steps per minute.
- Cadence 160 (2 minutes): the teacher plays a metronome app through the speaker and the class jogs, matching every foot strike to a beep.
- Cadence 170 (2 minutes): raise the beat without speeding up, using shorter steps with the foot landing under the hips.
- Cadence 180 (2 minutes): last step up, adding a 30-yard build-up on each long straightaway.
- Share out (1 minute): each student repeats the count and tells a partner which cadence felt most comfortable.
Rules
- Keep the same jogging speed; only step frequency changes.
- The whole class runs in the same direction and passes on the outside.
- Safety: keep the speaker volume low enough to hear the teacher's whistle.
Variations
Easier
Stay at 160 and 170 steps per minute with no build-ups.
Standard
Three 2-minute blocks at 160, 170, and 180 steps per minute.
Harder
Alternate 30 seconds at 185 and 30 seconds at 165 at the same speed.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: match the push frequency on the wheels to the metronome.
- Students who are deaf or hard of hearing: a partner keeps the beat with visible claps or a flashing phone light.
- Lower fitness level: alternate 1 minute jogging on the beat with 30 seconds of walking.
Learning goals
- Calculate personal running cadence with a simple method.
- Match step frequency to a beat set by a digital app.
- Reduce running impact with shorter steps landing under the hips.
Equipment for a class of 25
- speaker: 1
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
Any free metronome app works; test the volume outside before class. Many students lengthen their stride when the cadence goes up: cue short, quick steps.
