Little Soccer Stars at the Traffic Light
Each child dribbles a ball around the playground and follows the teacher's traffic light: green means go, yellow means super slow, red means trap the ball and freeze. Children practice ball control with their feet and reacting to a signal.
How to play
- Everyone gets a ball and parks it in front of their feet; the teacher shows the green, yellow and red cards (1 min).
- Green: tap the ball gently with your foot all around the playground without bumping into anyone (2 min).
- Add red: trap the ball under the sole of your foot and freeze like a statue (1 min).
- Add yellow: dribble in slow motion, tiny step by tiny step (2 min).
- Last light is red: park the balls back in the teacher's garage (1 min).
Rules
- Tiny taps: the ball stays close to my foot.
- On red, I step on my ball and freeze.
- If my ball rolls away, I walk to get it.
- I look where I'm going so I don't bump anyone.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, only green and red, and they may carry the ball if they get frustrated.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, green, yellow and red with the cards.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, swap the cards for drum signals and add blue: use your other foot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: move the ball with a hand from the wheelchair or push it with a pool noodle.
- Hearing loss: keep the traffic light fully visual with large cards.
- Autism: preview the three cards before starting and offer a cone-marked route of their own.
Learning goals
- Dribble the ball with gentle foot taps.
- Stop the ball by stepping on it.
- Change speed in response to visual signals.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Soft balls: 25
- Hand drum: 1
Teacher tip
Use soft balls that don't roll too far so they don't escape on every touch. The classic mistake is booting the ball; model an "ant tap" with the inside of the foot.

Achoo, Into Your Elbow!
Children move around like animals and when the teacher goes “Ah… ah… achoo!”, they stop and hide their face in their elbow as if sneezing or coughing.
