Little Community Helpers in Action
The teacher holds up a card with a community helper and the whole group acts it out at once: firefighters climbing the ladder, mail carriers delivering, cooks kneading and gardeners digging. It warms up the body and builds expression and imitation of everyday actions.
How to play
- Beforehand, prepare five cards, each with a picture of a helper. Kids spread out.
- Firefighter card: climb a tall ladder with arms and knees, grab the hose and spray the fire side to side with a "shhh." A minute and a half.
- Mail carrier card: walk briskly carrying a pretend bag and deliver letters to the gym walls by touching them with a hand. One minute.
- Cook card: whisk eggs hard, knead dough on the floor on your knees, and flip the pancake with a jump. One minute.
- Gardener card: dig in a squat, plant seeds, water them and grow slowly like a flower. A minute and a half.
- Finish: flash the cards faster and faster and the group switches jobs as soon as they see each one. One minute.
Rules
- Everyone works in their own space without bumping.
- Mail carriers touch the wall with a hand, gently.
- When a new card goes up, switch jobs.
- Make lots of job noises, but no yelling.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just two helpers, with the teacher acting them out too.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, all four helpers, one minute each.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, name the helper with no card and let kids invent another action for that job.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: act out each job with arms and voice from the wheelchair.
- Hearing loss: the cards are the signal, and the teacher holds them up high.
- More skilled kids climb the ladder on tiptoes; less skilled kids do one gesture per job.
Learning goals
- Act out familiar jobs with the body.
- Link a picture to a sequence of actions.
- Warm up arms and legs with varied movements.
Equipment for a class of 25
- picture cards: 5
Teacher tip
Big, clear pictures replace any explanation. Ask first who knows a firefighter or a mail carrier: talking about their families really motivates them.
