Leaderless Group Stop and Go
A creative movement warm-up in which the whole group walks through the space and, without anyone giving a signal, tries to stop, start, jump, or sit down at the same time. It develops peripheral vision, group awareness, and stage presence before ensemble work.
How to play
- Everyone walks around the room at a normal pace, filling the gaps with eyes forward, not on the floor (1 min).
- Anyone can stop at any moment; as soon as someone stops, everyone must stop as fast as possible (2 min).
- Then anyone can start walking again and the whole group starts with them; the goal is that no one can tell who began.
- Add actions (2 min): a vertical jump, crouching, or switching to slow motion; anyone can start them and the rest follow.
- Wrap-up (2 min): the group tries to make three perfect stops in a row, with no one early or late.
Rules
- No talking or hand signals.
- Walk without touching anyone or clustering in groups.
- Keep eyes forward and use peripheral vision.
- Anyone can start a movement, not always the same people.
Variations
Easier
Only stop and go, with half the class in a smaller space.
Standard
Stop, go, and two more actions started by anyone.
Harder
Work with eyes half closed or looking at the ceiling, following only the sound of footsteps.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student takes part in a wheelchair and their stops count like anyone's; choose arm actions instead of jumps.
- Visual impairment: use loud footsteps and a nearby partner who guides with a light touch on the elbow.
- Lower fitness: since intensity is low, walking pace can easily be slowed down.
Learning goals
- Sense the group through peripheral vision.
- Respond together without a visible leader.
- Build stage presence and focus.
Teacher tip
At first the same students always start; ask anyone who has already started a stop to let others go next. It's a classic improv exercise that works best in total silence.
