Lead and Follow with a Scarf: Partner Warm-Up
In pairs, each student holds one end of a scarf: one leads the movement and the other follows to the music, with no direct contact. It works as a general warm-up and as a first step toward understanding partner dance connection.
How to play
- Each freely chosen pair holds a scarf taut between them by the ends (1 min).
- The leader suggests forward, backward and sideways movement to the music; the follower copies it while keeping the scarf taut (3 min).
- On the teacher's signal, switch roles without stopping the music (3 min).
- Add a turn under the scarf, and the pair talks about which amount of tension felt most comfortable (1 min).
Rules
- Never drop the scarf suddenly, so your partner doesn't lose balance.
- Walk, don't run.
- Both roles get equal practice time.
Variations
Easier
Only forward and backward movement at a slow pace.
Standard
Movement in every direction with a role switch.
Harder
The follower closes their eyes and the leader takes responsibility for the space, which must be clear.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: the scarf is swapped for a stiffer foam pool noodle that conveys direction better.
- Limited mobility: the wheelchair user leads or follows along curved paths while the partner adjusts the speed.
- Autism or touch sensitivity: the scarf avoids skin-to-skin contact, and the student can always choose the same partner.
Learning goals
- Gradually warm up the body with rhythmic movement.
- Understand the leader-follower connection without direct contact.
- Try out both partner dance roles.
Equipment for a class of 25

- speaker: 1
Teacher tip
Use a medium-tempo song. If you don't have scarves, ribbons or pinnies work too.
