Knee Tag in Pairs Inside the Square
In pairs, inside a small cone square, each student tries to touch the other's knees with an open hand while protecting their own by moving their feet. It is a light opposition duel that activates the legs, a low stance and reaction, and it is self-refereed.
How to play
- Warm-up inside the square: side shuffles, adjustment steps and a low defensive stance for 20 seconds each (2 min).
- 30-second duel: score a point for each clean open-hand touch on your partner's knee; everyone counts their own (2 min).
- Rotation: after each duel the winner moves one square to the right and the loser to the left, so pairs keep changing (2 min).
- Final duel with a new rule: a touch counts only if it follows a shoulder fake (1 min).
- Thank your partner and briefly share what worked to protect your knees (1 min).
Rules
- Touch with an open hand, with no hitting, pushing or grabbing.
- Protect yourself with footwork, never by blocking with your arms.
- Each player calls their own points and, if in doubt, the point does not count.
- Keep your head up; never charge with your head down.
Variations
Easier
Play in a bigger square and a touch on the thigh counts.
Standard
30-second duels in 10 x 10 ft squares with rotating partners.
Harder
Each player also tucks a pinnie into a pocket that the opponent may pull.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play shoulder tag seated facing a seated partner or someone in a wheelchair, with the same open-hand rule.
- Visual impairment: play with a fixed partner, each holding one end of a pinnie with the free hand to keep contact.
- Ankle injury: referees two squares and keeps track of the rotations.
Learning goals
- Improve low stance and quick changes of direction.
- Read an opponent's intentions in a light opposition duel.
- Self-referee a light-contact game honestly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 60
Teacher tip
Insist on open hands and heads up from the very first duel. The ladder-style rotation keeps pairs from repeating and balances the matchups on its own.
