Jump Rope to the Song's Tempo: 120, 140 and 160
A warm-up with individual jump ropes synced to three songs of increasing tempo (120, 140 and 160 beats per minute). Students match their jump to the music's beat and, for each song, choose the rope step that best fits that tempo.
How to play
- Ankle, knee and wrist mobility, then jumping without a rope to the first song's beat (1 min).
- Song at 120 bpm: basic jump with a rebound bounce, one jump every two beats, finding the beat (2 min).
- Song at 140 bpm: one jump per beat, feet together or alternating, by choice (2 min).
- Song at 160 bpm: running step over the rope, or active pauses marking the beat with the feet if it cannot be sustained (2 min).
- Debrief: which tempo felt comfortable? Which step did I choose and why? Record heart rate at the end (2 min).
Rules
- Jump in your own space with at least 6 feet all around.
- If you lose the beat, stop, mark the beat with your feet and come back in on a strong beat.
- Nobody jumps barefoot or with loose laces.
- Music volume must let students hear the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Only the first two songs with the basic step.
Standard
Three songs of increasing tempo with a chosen step.
Harder
In the 160 bpm song, add crossovers or double unders every eight beats.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: marks each song's beat with claps or a bouncing ball and does the wrist turn with the rope folded.
- Hearing impairment: follows the beat through floor vibration near the speaker and a partner who taps the beat by hand.
- Ankle injury: does the rope motion with the rope folded in one hand and marches in place.
Learning goals
- Sync jumping with different musical tempos.
- Choose a step suited to the demands of each tempo.
- Relate the music's tempo to the heart rate response.
Equipment for a class of 25
- jump ropes: 30
- speaker: 1
Teacher tip
Build the playlist with a bpm detector or look for playlists already sorted by tempo; songs with a clear beat (pop, electronic) make the activity work much better.
