In, Out, Beside: Hoop Reaction Game
Each student has a hoop on the ground and responds to the teacher's calls by jumping in, out, beside, or running around the hoop as fast as possible. Students work on reacting to verbal cues, jumping, and spatial concepts in relation to an object.
How to play
- Give each student a hoop to lay on the ground in their own space with room all around (1 min).
- Teach the calls: "In," two-foot jump into the hoop; "Out," jump backward out; "Beside," one foot in and one foot out; "Around," run one lap around the hoop (1 min).
- First round: the teacher gives a call every 3–4 seconds and students respond; anyone who makes a mistake just fixes it, nobody is out (1 min).
- Second round with a hand drum: one beat, jog anywhere in general space; two beats, find an empty hoop and jump in; keep following calls from that hoop (2 min).
- Trick round: the teacher makes a gesture that does not match the word, and students must follow the word, not the gesture (1 min).
- Finish: a student volunteer gives the calls from the middle while the teacher plays (1 min).
Rules
- Never step on the edge of the hoop: it slips.
- Jump with both feet at the same time and land softly.
- During the jog, never jump into a hoop that is taken; find another one.
- If you make a mistake you stay in the game and just fix the move.
Variations
Easier
Use only "In" and "Out," always paired with a gesture.
Standard
Use four calls, with jogging and finding a hoop on the drumbeat.
Harder
Link two calls in a row, such as "In, Around," or do them on one foot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: use a large hoop on the floor to roll in and out of with the wheelchair, or respond by placing hands inside or outside a hoop.
- Hearing impairment: pair each call with a picture card or a set gesture.
- Fitness level: students who respond easily jump on one foot or backward; students who are slower can walk the moves.
Learning goals
- React quickly to verbal cues.
- Understand the concepts in, out, beside, and around.
- Jump and land with control.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Hoops: 25
- Hand drum: 1
Teacher tip
With the youngest students, practice each call twice before speeding up. Trick gestures work well from age 7; with 6-year-olds, keep the gesture and the word the same.
