Horns and Sirens Around Town
Using a hoop as a steering wheel, children drive around the playground and respond to street sounds the teacher imitates: a car horn, a siren, a bike bell, and a truck backing up. They practice recognizing everyday sounds and reacting safely.
How to play
- Each child takes a hoop as a steering wheel and starts the car with a "vroom"; drive slowly around the whole playground without bumping (1 min).
- First sound, the horn "beep-beep!": brake hard and wave at the car next to you (1 min).
- Second sound, the siren "wee-oo, wee-oo": pull over to the edge of the playground, stop, and let the ambulance (the teacher) go by (1 min).
- Third sound, the bike bell "ring-ring!": leave the car and pedal standing up, lifting your knees (1 min).
- Fourth sound, a truck backing up "beep, beep, beep": walk backward very slowly, looking over your shoulder (1 min).
- The teacher mixes the sounds faster and faster, sometimes without the hand signal; at the end we park, put the hoop on the ground, turn off the engine, and take a breath (2 min).
Rules
- Drive without bumping other cars.
- When you hear the siren, everyone pulls over.
- Backing up is slow, and we look behind us.
Variations
Easier
Age 3: horn and siren only, with the teacher doing the gesture too.
Standard
Age 4: all four sounds, first with gestures, then without.
Harder
Age 5: a child plays the ambulance or the truck and calls out the sounds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: drives their own wheelchair or walks with support; backing up becomes braking and turning the wheel.
- Hearing impairment: each sound has a colored card the teacher holds up (red for siren, yellow for horn, and so on).
- Autism: use a soft voice for the siren and preview all the sounds before starting.
Learning goals
- Recognize common street sounds.
- React to each sound with a movement.
- Learn safe behavior when hearing a siren or a backing truck.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Take a moment to talk about what we really do when we hear a siren or a beeping truck on the street. Backing up must be very slow; that's when most bumps happen.
