Hoop Steering Wheel: Curves, Hills and Bumps
Each child turns a hoop into a car steering wheel and drives around the playground, adjusting their body to the curves, hills and bumps the teacher calls out. It warms up the body and builds body control on the move.
How to play
- Everyone holds a hoop like a steering wheel, one hand on each side, and starts the engine: "Vroom!" (1 min).
- Drive slowly all around the playground, looking ahead so we don't bump into other cars (1 min).
- Curves! Turn the wheel and lean your body the same way (1 min).
- Uphill! Climb on tiptoes, nice and slow; downhill! quick little steps (1 min).
- Bumps! Every drum beat is a bump, so do a tiny hop without letting go of the wheel (1 min).
- Park, turn off the engine and take a big breath with the wheel in your lap (1 min).
Rules
- Two hands on my wheel, always.
- I look past my wheel so I don't crash.
- If I bump someone, I say "sorry" and drive on slowly.
- When I hear "park," I stop right where I am.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just driving, curves and parking; the teacher drives in front and they copy.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, curves, hills and bumps called out loud.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the teacher only shows picture cards (curve, hill, bump) and adds a very slow reverse.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: drives seated in the wheelchair holding the hoop and shows curves by leaning the trunk.
- Hearing loss: raise the drum for bumps and point an arm for curves.
- Autism: give them a "lane" marked with cones along the edge of the playground so there's no cross traffic.
Learning goals
- Adjust posture to changes in direction and speed.
- Move through space without bumping into others.
- Gradually warm up the whole body.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Hoops: 25
- Hand drum: 1
Teacher tip
Teach them to hold the hoop at "3 and 9 o'clock," not from inside, so nobody slips it over their head. The classic mistake is running while staring at the wheel: remind them that drivers watch the road.
