Hoop Shape Builders on the Call
Students jog around the blacktop, and when the teacher calls out a shape, each group of four runs to its base and builds it on the ground with six hoops before standing inside. Students work on cooperation, quick group decisions, and warming up with running.
How to play
- Make 6 groups of 4 and give each group 6 hoops in a corner of the blacktop, which becomes its base (1 min).
- Everyone jogs mixed together in the middle, away from the bases, changing locomotor movement when the teacher calls it (30 sec).
- When a shape is called, for example "the number 8," "a snowman," or "a caterpillar," each group runs to its base, builds it with the hoops, and everyone stands inside with at least one foot in a hoop (1 min).
- The teacher checks the shapes, cheers for the clearest ones, and everyone jogs back to the middle; play 4 more shapes (4 min).
- Final round: each group invents a secret shape and builds it, and the other groups walk around it trying to guess what it is (90 sec).
Rules
- Hoops are placed on the ground, never thrown.
- Do not step on the edge of a hoop: it slips.
- Every group member must place at least one hoop.
- Keep the bases clear while jogging.
Variations
Easier
Simple shapes with few hoops, such as a line, a circle, or a square.
Standard
Six-hoop shapes built with the whole group standing inside.
Harder
Build the shapes without talking, using only gestures, or within a 20-second time limit.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be the group architect, deciding from outside where each hoop goes, or place hoops within reach.
- Autism: keep a card at the base with a picture of each shape that will be called.
- Fitness level: lengthen the jog between shapes for more active students or shorten the distance to the base for those who tire.
Learning goals
- Agree quickly to solve a shared task.
- Show shapes in space using equipment.
- Warm up with running and changes of movement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Hoops: 36
Teacher tip
Choose shapes everyone knows that are recognizable with six hoops. If one student always does all the work, require a different person to place each hoop.
