Hoop Safe Base Tag
A tag game where hoops spread around the gym are safe bases, but only for one person and for five seconds at a time. It builds dodging, decision-making and an intense warm-up full of short sprints.
How to play
- Scatter 10 hoops around the gym and choose 3 taggers wearing pinnies (1 min).
- On the signal, taggers try to tag everyone else; anyone standing inside a hoop is safe (about 2 min per round).
- Only one person fits in each hoop, for five seconds at most, counted out loud by the student inside.
- If someone arrives at an occupied hoop, the student inside must leave and find another.
- A tagged student puts on the pinnie and becomes the tagger, while the old tagger hands it over and is free: no one is out.
- Play 4 rounds, changing how students travel: running, hopping on one foot inside the hoop, sliding sideways (6 min).
Rules
- Tag with a gentle touch on the back or shoulder, no pushing.
- Don't jump onto the hoop at full speed: slow down first.
- Five seconds maximum in each safe base.
- On the whistle, everyone freezes where they are.
Variations
Easier
Use more hoops and allow ten seconds inside.
Standard
10 hoops, 3 taggers and five seconds per base.
Harder
Remove two hoops each round and add a fourth tagger.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student has their own hoop to stay in as long as they want and tags from there with a foam noodle.
- Visual impairment: play holding hands with a guide partner.
- Fitness level: students who tire can be the second counter for a round.
Learning goals
- Dodge taggers using changes of direction.
- Decide quickly when to use a safe base.
- Follow the rules and accept role changes.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 10
- pinnies: 3
Teacher tip
Without the five-second limit the game stalls, so watch it closely in the first round. Use flat spots or large disc cones instead of hoops if the floor is slippery.

Active Blind Man's Bluff
A dynamic version of Blind Man's Bluff in which a guide uses only their voice to lead a blindfolded partner to tag classmates moving inside a small area.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise.
Animal Races
Students move around the space imitating different animals: bear walks, frog jumps, crab walks, and kangaroo hops, with short races between lines.
Around the World
Different areas of the playground become continents, and students travel between them using the locomotor move the teacher calls out.
Balance Pose Challenge
Students hold balance poses alone, then in pairs and small groups with a limited number of body parts touching the floor.
Balance the Pole on Your Palm
Each student tries to balance a pole upright on the palm of the hand, first standing still and then walking, switching hands and heights.
