Hoop Path Jumping Patterns
Four hoop paths in different shapes are laid out on the floor, and students travel along them with jumping patterns such as two-foot jumps, hops and jumping jacks. It builds jumping and landing skills, footwork rhythm and leg activation.
How to play
- Set up four paths of 6 hoops each: straight, zigzag, side-by-side pairs and mixed (1 min).
- Make four groups of 6 or 7, one at each path, lined up behind the first hoop.
- Round 1: jump with feet together into each hoop and jog back along the outside (2 min).
- Round 2: hop on the leg of your choice; in the paired hoops, land one foot in each (2 min).
- Every 2 minutes groups rotate clockwise to the next path.
- Last round: each group invents a pattern and teaches it to another group (2 min).
Rules
- The next student starts when the one ahead reaches the third hoop.
- Land softly with knees slightly bent.
- If you step on a hoop, fix it and keep going: no big deal.
- Always return along the outside of the path.
Variations
Easier
Place hoops closer together and allow steps instead of jumps.
Standard
Use all four paths with the patterns described.
Harder
Space hoops farther apart and add a half turn on the last jump.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: travel alongside the path, touching each hoop with a hand or a pole.
- Autism: place a card with a drawing of the pattern at the start of each path.
- Fitness level: students who tire can alternate one path jumping and one walking.
Learning goals
- Perform different types of jumps with control.
- Keep a steady footwork rhythm.
- Warm up lower-body joints before the lesson.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Ask for silent landings: it is the easiest way to get students to absorb the impact. If hoops slide, outline them in chalk or use flat disc cones instead.

Active Blind Man's Bluff
A dynamic version of Blind Man's Bluff in which a guide uses only their voice to lead a blindfolded partner to tag classmates moving inside a small area.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise.
Animal Races
Students move around the space imitating different animals: bear walks, frog jumps, crab walks, and kangaroo hops, with short races between lines.
Around the World
Different areas of the playground become continents, and students travel between them using the locomotor move the teacher calls out.
Balance Pose Challenge
Students hold balance poses alone, then in pairs and small groups with a limited number of body parts touching the floor.
Balance the Pole on Your Palm
Each student tries to balance a pole upright on the palm of the hand, first standing still and then walking, switching hands and heights.
