Hoop-Linked Partners: No-Hands Carry
In pairs, students carry a hoop pinned between two body parts without using their hands and travel through a course of cones. Students work on cooperation, communication, and matching their pace to a partner's.
How to play
- Scatter 6 cones around the blacktop about 8 yards apart and pair up students of similar height, one hoop per pair (1 min).
- Round 1: partners face each other, hold the hoop between their stomachs, and walk until they have touched three cones with a foot; if the hoop drops, reset it and keep going (2 min).
- Round 2: the hoop is held between their shoulders, standing side by side, and the pair moves sideways, circling each cone they reach (90 sec).
- Round 3: back to back with the hoop between their backs; one whistle means move forward, two whistles mean move sideways (2 min).
- Round 4: the pair chooses its favorite way and tries to touch all 6 cones with as few drops as possible, counting drops out loud (90 sec).
- To finish, each pair shares which way was easiest and why (30 sec).
Rules
- No touching the hoop with your hands, except to reset it after a drop.
- Walk or jog gently; never run while carrying the hoop.
- Before moving, partners agree on one word for go and one for stop.
- If you meet another pair, the pair moving sideways yields.
Variations
Easier
Hold the hoop between stomachs and walk in a straight line between two close cones.
Standard
Travel the cone course, changing the body part every round.
Harder
Play in groups of three with two hoops, so the middle student holds one hoop with each partner.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: pin the hoop between the partner's shoulder and the student's arm or the side of the wheelchair, on a smooth surface.
- Shyness or autism: let the student choose a familiar partner and start with the side-by-side version, which avoids face-to-face contact.
- Fitness level: confident pairs move to a light jog or add a far cone; pairs that tire do shorter rounds.
Learning goals
- Coordinate movement with a partner by adjusting speed.
- Communicate out loud to start, turn, and stop.
- Warm up the body gradually and cooperatively.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Hoops: 13
- Cones: 6
Teacher tip
Pair students of similar height or the hoop will tilt and keep falling. Praise the pairs that talk the most, not the fastest ones: the challenge is working together.
