Hoop Islands: Nobody Left in the Water
The group moves around with different running styles while the music plays and, when it stops, everyone must be safe with at least one foot inside a hoop, even though hoops are removed every round. Nobody is eliminated: the whole group wins or loses the round and must plan how to solve it.
How to play
- Spread 15 hoops around the area; with music on, the group jogs between them without stepping in and changes movement on the signal (butt kicks, high knees, side shuffle) (2 min).
- When the music stops, everyone needs one foot inside a hoop within five seconds; remove two hoops after each round (2 min).
- Strategy break: the group has 30 seconds to decide how to split up when only a few hoops are left (1 min).
- Keep removing hoops down to four; the group may use hands or any body part as long as it is inside the hoop (2 min).
- Quick debrief: which strategy worked and who came up with the key idea (1 min).
Rules
- Nobody runs over the hoops; step in only when the music stops.
- No pushing to get into a hoop; ask for room and help each other balance.
- No piggybacks or climbing on classmates.
- If someone has no spot, the whole group loses the round and replays it; nobody is ever eliminated.
Variations
Easier
Remove only one hoop per round and allow eight seconds to get set.
Standard
Remove two hoops per round down to four, with a strategy break.
Harder
Only feet count inside the hoops and the group must be safe in three seconds.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: assign a large fixed hoop where one wheel inside is enough, and it becomes their subgroup's meeting point.
- Autism: warn before each stop with a visual countdown, and let the student choose a less crowded hoop.
- Overweight or low fitness: may walk briskly instead of jogging during the movement phases.
Learning goals
- Raise body temperature through varied movement.
- Plan a group solution to a problem that keeps getting harder.
- Help others keep their balance in tight spaces.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 15
- speaker: 1
Teacher tip
Remove hoops from the corners first so the group gathers in the center. Notice who leads the strategy and give a voice to students who rarely speak up.
