Hand Fronton: Palm and Wrist Activation Against the Wall
A solo and partner warm-up hitting the ball against a wall with an open hand, as in Basque hand pelota. It gets hands, wrists and shoulders ready and teaches how to strike with the palm without getting hurt.
PhaseWarm-up
Duration9 min
Ages16–18
SpaceOutdoor yard
EquipmentSoft rubber balls, Masking tape

How to play
- Hand prep: rub palms, open and close fingers, wrist circles and gentle palm presses against the wall (2 min).
- No-bounce taps: each student taps the ball against the wall with the palm, softly, alternating right and left hand (2 min).
- Hit after the bounce: let the ball bounce once and hit it above the tape line, aiming for 10 in a row (2 min).
- Partners take turns: one hits, the ball bounces, the other hits, no competition, counting the longest rally (3 min).
Rules
- Soft rubber or foam balls only: never a hard fronton ball.
- Hit with a cupped palm and fingers together, never with the fingertips.
- If your hand hurts, stop and switch hands or use a forearm bump.
Variations
Easier
You may catch and throw by hand instead of hitting.
Standard
Palm strike after one bounce, alternating hands.
Harder
Non-dominant hand only for the last partner rally.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: the partner adjusts power so the ball comes back at chest height.
- Low vision: a large ball in a color that contrasts with the wall; the partner calls "go" on each hit.
- Hesitant students: start one meter from the wall and step back after five in a row.
Learning goals
- Warm up hands, wrists and shoulders before a striking game.
- Strike with the palm using a technique that doesn't hurt.
- Control direction and force against a wall.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft rubber balls: 30
- masking tape: 1
Teacher tip
Tape the line one meter off the ground to mimic the metal strip on a fronton wall. Soft rubber balls from the elementary equipment bin work perfectly; avoid tennis balls, which sting at short range.
