Group Juggle: Fixed Passing Order with Three Balls
In circles of eight to ten, the group builds a fixed passing order in which each person always throws to the same person and always receives from the same person. More balls are added and then a second order running the opposite way, which demands divided attention, memory and communication.
How to play
- Shoulder, wrist and neck mobility in a circle (1 min).
- First round with one ball: everyone says the receiver's name and throws underhand; nobody receives twice. Repeat the order until it is memorized (2 min).
- Add a second and third ball in the same order; count how many passes in a row the group can make without a drop (2 min).
- Create a different second order using only a ball of another color, which travels at the same time as the others (2 min).
- Quick reflection: what helped the group avoid dropping balls? (1 min).
Rules
- Always throw underhand and say the receiver's name.
- Only soft foam balls are used.
- If a ball drops, the intended receiver picks it up and puts it back into play.
- Nobody moves from their spot in the circle.
Variations
Easier
One or two balls and circles of six.
Standard
Three balls in the same order and a second order with another ball.
Harder
Switch places in the circle every 30 seconds without changing who you throw to.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: ball with a bell, and the thrower says the name and counts to two before throwing.
- Limited mobility: joins the circle seated, with chest-height throws.
- Hearing impairment: make eye contact and point to the receiver before throwing.
Learning goals
- Sustain divided attention across several tasks at once.
- Memorize and stick to a group sequence.
- Communicate clearly to reach a shared goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 12
Teacher tip
In the classroom, move desks aside and set circles away from windows and screens; at the end, ask which group strategies could carry over to a team sport.
