Gentle Steamroller Giant Ball Massage
Students lie face down side by side on mats while two classmates slowly roll a giant ball over their backs like a gentle steamroller. The soft, even pressure feels relaxing and builds trust and care within the group.
How to play
- Set up 2 rows of mats pushed together; on each row, 6 students lie face down side by side, forehead on hands and eyes closed (1 min).
- Two students per row, one on each end, hold a giant ball with both hands and slowly roll it from each student's shoulders down to their legs.
- The ball travels along the row from one student to the next with very gentle pressure; do 2 passes down and back (2 min).
- Rotation: the two rollers lie down, two of the students lying down become rollers, and classmates who were waiting seated doing slow breathing fill the open spots.
- Keep rotating until every student has had at least one pass (4 min).
- To finish, everyone lies still for 30 seconds feeling their relaxed back, then rolls to one side and sits up slowly (1 min).
Rules
- The ball never goes over the head or neck.
- Rollers never climb or lean on the ball; they just guide it with their hands.
- If someone says "stop," lift the ball and move on to the next student.
- Work in silence and without rushing.
Variations
Easier
The teacher guides the ball alongside two students to control the pressure.
Standard
Two students roll the ball along the row for two passes.
Harder
Rollers make small circles with the ball on each classmate's back before moving on.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student receives the ball seated in a wheelchair, rolled gently over the upper back, or helps guide it from the side.
- Touch sensitivity or autism: the student may choose to roll only, or receive a pass on the legs only.
- Strength level: add a third roller so the ball stays well controlled.
Learning goals
- Relax muscles after exercise through gentle pressure.
- Trust classmates and take care of their bodies.
- Respect other people's stop signals.
Equipment for a class of 25
- giant ball: 2
- mats: 12
Teacher tip
Do the first pass yourself to model the speed and pressure. If you don't have a giant ball, a large stability ball or a slightly underinflated beach ball works too.
