Garden Bed Inspection Walk
Children become gardeners who walk the garden paths in different ways to check on the plants without stepping into the beds. It's a gentle warm-up that teaches them to move carefully through a natural space.
How to play
- Gather at the garden entrance and explain that today we're gardeners checking on the plants: we only walk on the paths (1 min).
- Tiptoe along "so we don't wake up the lettuce," then walk normally on the wide paths (1 min).
- On a clap, stop next to a bed, squat down, and look closely at one plant; on the next clap, keep walking (1 min).
- Walk sideways all the way around one bed, facing the plants (1 min).
- "Here comes a cloud!": walk quickly without running, and when the teacher says "It's raining!" stop at the edge of the path (1 min).
- Finish in a circle and share what we saw: a flower, a bug, a really big leaf (1 min).
Rules
- Feet stay on the path, never in the plants' dirt.
- When you hear the clap, stop and look.
- We look at plants with our eyes: no pulling, no stepping.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, everyone walks in a line behind the teacher on one path and stops together at the same plants.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, each child picks their own path and stops wherever they like on the clap.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the teacher gives direction cues: "Go around the strawberry bed to the right," "Stop next to the tallest plant."
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: use the widest, flattest paths, and a buddy walks alongside the wheelchair or walker pointing out plants.
- Visual impairment: the child walks hand in hand with a buddy and at each stop touches a leaf or smells an herb.
- Autism: preview the route with a photo of the garden and keep the same stops in the same order every time.
Learning goals
- Warm up the body with varied, gentle movement.
- Move through a defined space while respecting its boundaries.
- Observe and take care of the school garden.
Teacher tip
No garden? Chalk three or four rectangular "beds" with drawn plants and leave paths between them. The usual mistake is stepping into the dirt when stopping, so show them first how to squat with their feet on the path.
