Footwork: Jump Stops, Stride Stops and Pivots
Progressive warm-up of stops and pivots with the ball so students learn to stop without traveling and to protect their knees and ankles on landing. It sets up the shooting, passing and 1-on-1 work that follows.
How to play
- In pairs with one ball, jog from one cone line to the other (15 m / 50 ft): the ball handler tosses the ball ahead, catches it and makes a jump stop, landing on both feet at once (2 min).
- Same route with a stride stop: first foot down, second foot down and balance; the partner calls out the pivot foot (2 min).
- After each stop, do 180-degree front and reverse pivots while protecting the ball at chin height (2 min).
- Finish: the partner acts as a passive defender with arms out, and the ball handler pivots to find a passing lane and passes back (2 min).
Rules
- Land with knees bent and lined up over the toes.
- After a jump stop either foot can be the pivot; after a stride stop only the first foot down can be.
- The passive defender never touches the ball, only blocks lanes.
- Pairs move side by side with 2 m (6 ft) between them.
Variations
Easier
Do it walking and without the ball, just the stop and pivot.
Standard
Jump stops and stride stops at a jog with pivots and a passive defender at the end.
Harder
Catch a pass on the move from your partner before every stop.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: practices braking and a 180-degree chair turn while protecting the ball on the lap.
- Overweight or low fitness level: does the route at a brisk walk and takes longer rests between sets.
- Autism: picture cards for each stop and a fixed order of drills to anticipate changes.
Learning goals
- Tell the jump stop from the stride stop and identify the legal pivot foot for each.
- Absorb landings with safe knee and ankle alignment.
- Protect the ball with pivots against an opponent.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 15
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
Watch for knees caving in on the stop and pause the drill if you see it in several students. This is the best moment to explain the traveling rule with examples.
