Farm Whispers Around the Circle
Sitting in a circle, an animal sound travels in whispers from ear to ear, and the last child says it out loud to see if it arrived the same. Children practice careful listening, a soft voice, and calming down at the end of the session.
How to play
- Sit close together in a circle and practice whispering: talking with air and no voice, "as if the animal were asleep" (1 min).
- The teacher whispers an animal sound to the first child, for example "moo," cupping a hand so no one else hears (1 min).
- The sound travels from ear to ear; each child says it only once, very softly (2 min).
- The last child says it out loud and the teacher reveals the original; if it changed, we laugh at how it transformed (1 min).
- Final round: the sound is a sleeping animal, "zzz," and everyone closes their eyes after receiving it (1 min).
Rules
- Whisper close to the ear, no shouting or strong blowing.
- Say it only once.
- Wait for your turn quietly.
Variations
Easier
Age 3: small groups of five with an adult and very familiar sounds.
Standard
Age 4: a half-class circle with single animal sounds.
Harder
Age 5: the sound is two animals in a row ("moo-quack").
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: classmates come to their spot to whisper.
- Hearing impairment: instead of a whisper, the message travels as an animal gesture done very slowly.
- Autism: if they dislike air in their ear, the classmate makes the sound softly face to face.
Learning goals
- Calm down with a listening game.
- Control voice and breath while speaking.
- Wait for a turn as a group.
Teacher tip
Make two circles if the group is large; with more than twelve kids the wait gets long. Show kids how to cup their hand like a little tube near a classmate's ear without touching it.
