Fairies Sprinkle Dew on the Flowers
With a scarf for wings, children become fairies who flutter on tiptoe through the garden and sprinkle dew on the flowers (cones) with a gentle touch. Light running warms up the body while they practice tiptoe balance and using the space.
How to play
- The teacher hands each fairy a scarf and we hold it behind us with both hands, like wings (1 min).
- Fly on tiptoe around the garden without stepping on a flower or bumping into another fairy (1 min).
- Sprinkle dew: touch a flower with the scarf, whisper "Wake up!" and fly to another one (2 min).
- Colored dew: the teacher calls a color and we only sprinkle flowers of that color (1 min).
- Fast flying: flap faster, still on tiptoe, and when the teacher claps, land next to a flower (1 min).
- Fairies rest: lower our heels and put the scarves in the teacher's basket (1 min).
Rules
- Fairies fly on tiptoe, without a sound.
- I touch the flower softly, like a raindrop.
- If another fairy is at my flower, I find a different one.
- When I hear a clap, I land and stay still.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, they can drop to flat feet now and then and touch any flower.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, tiptoe the whole time with colored flowers.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, sprinkle two flowers of the same color in a row before switching.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: fly in the wheelchair with the scarf held high and touch cones set on a box at reach height.
- Visual impairment: tape a tightly sealed bottle with a bell inside to some cones so they can find the flowers by sound.
- More advanced: balance the scarf on an open palm while flying.
Learning goals
- Move lightly on tiptoe.
- Travel through space while avoiding classmates.
- Tell colors apart and respond with movement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Cones: 20
- Scarves: 25
Teacher tip
Spread the cones out well before you start so kids don't bunch up in one corner. Model the "raindrop touch"; otherwise they tend to swat with the scarf and knock cones over.
