Eyes-Closed Clap Count
Sitting with eyes closed, children silently count the claps, snaps or soft taps the teacher makes and show the number with their fingers. It's a very short game that brings the group back to calm while training focus and listening.
How to play
- Seat the group in a circle or spread out, hands on knees and eyes closed; take three slow breaths together (30 sec).
- The teacher gives 2 to 6 slow claps; students count silently and, on the cue "Fingers!", show the number on their fingers without opening their eyes.
- The teacher says the right number and everyone opens their eyes to check; play 4 rounds, changing the speed of the claps (2 min).
- Make it harder by mixing sounds: claps and snaps; students show claps on one hand and snaps on the other (2 min).
- A student volunteer leads the sounds for two rounds while the teacher watches (1 min).
- Closing: the teacher claps softer and softer and everyone raises a hand when they can no longer hear it (30 sec).
Rules
- Eyes stay closed until the cue.
- Count silently, without saying the numbers out loud.
- Getting it wrong is fine; what matters is listening carefully.
- The leader makes soft sounds, never shouts or loud bangs.
Variations
Easier
Give no more than 3 slow, well-spaced claps.
Standard
Give 2 to 6 claps at different speeds, then mix in snaps.
Harder
Add floor taps, and students must say at the end how many sounds of each type they heard.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays from a wheelchair; if they can't use their fingers, they whisper the number to a partner.
- Hearing impairment: the student counts soft taps on the shoulder from a partner, or floor taps felt as vibrations.
- Autism or noise sensitivity: use very soft sounds, and let the student lead the sounds.
Learning goals
- Stay focused on listening for several seconds.
- Return to calm and quiet after the main activity.
- Accept mistakes calmly and keep participating.
Teacher tip
This is perfect for the last few minutes or while lining up to leave. Vary the speed, because fast claps demand the most concentration.
