Elephant, Mouse or Kangaroo: Listen to the Drum
Each drum sound is an animal: slow, heavy beats are the elephant; fast little taps are the mouse; one beat per jump is the kangaroo; silence means everyone hides. Kids listen and switch animals. It builds sound discrimination, rhythm and a good warm-up.
How to play
- Kids stand spread out. The teacher holds a tambourine and says: "The tambourine will tell you which animal you are."
- Slow, loud beats: the teacher walks like an elephant, heavy steps and one arm as a trunk. Everyone copies for one minute, stepping on each beat.
- Fast, soft finger taps: mice on tiptoes, tiny quick steps. One minute.
- One sharp beat per jump: kangaroos, two-foot jumps with hands in front. Give five to eight beats in a row, then rest.
- Silence: everyone crouches like mice hiding in their hole until the sound comes back.
- Last two minutes: mix the sounds without warning; kids must listen and switch animals on their own.
Rules
- Move to the beat of the tambourine, don't rush ahead.
- Elephants stomp but don't run.
- Kangaroos jump in their own open space.
- During silence, everyone is still and quiet.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just elephant and mouse, with the teacher moving too.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, add the kangaroo and the silence.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, mix sounds without modeling and let a child play the tambourine.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: show the animal with the arms on the beat (slow claps, quick fingers, arms up).
- Hearing loss: rely on the teacher hitting the tambourine very visibly, and let the child touch it to feel the vibration.
- More skilled kids' kangaroos jump backward; less skilled kids' mice walk normally but quietly.
Learning goals
- Tell slow sounds, fast sounds and silence apart.
- Match movement to the beat.
- Imitate big and small animals with the body.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tambourine: 1
Teacher tip
Make the sounds really different and move as the animal yourself at first. Silence is the magic moment: use a whisper to start again.
