Eight-Count Line Dance Warm-Up
The class learns four eight-count blocks of simple aerobic steps (march, grapevine, knee lifts and jumping jacks) and links them into a routine set to music. It builds rhythm, movement memory and a cardiovascular warm-up.
How to play
- Arrange students in staggered rows facing the teacher, an arm's length apart side to side (1 min).
- Block A: 8 counts of marching in place with arm swings; count 1 to 8 out loud with the class (1 min).
- Block B: grapevine, four counts to the right and four to the left (90 s).
- Block C: four knee lifts, touching each knee with the opposite hand (8 counts) (90 s).
- Block D: four jumping jacks (8 counts) (1 min).
- Link A-B-C-D to the music, repeat four times, and on the last round each row turns to face a different wall (4 min).
Rules
- Count out loud until the sequence is memorized.
- If you get lost, jump back in at the next block without stopping.
- Keep your spacing during the grapevine.
- Land jumps softly on the balls of your feet.
Variations
Easier
Use only blocks A and B and replace jumping jacks with step-outs.
Standard
Link all four blocks to music at a medium tempo.
Harder
Add a fifth block invented by a group of students and have them teach it to the class.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated version with arm movements for each block.
- Hearing impairment: show the eight counts clearly on your fingers and place the student in the front row.
- Fitness level: in block D, do step-out jacks without jumping, one leg at a time.
Learning goals
- Match movements to an eight-count musical beat.
- Memorize and link a sequence of steps.
- Gradually raise body temperature.

Teacher tip
Turn your back to the class when teaching side steps, or mirror them, so students don't mix up directions. Pick music around 120-130 beats per minute with a strong, clear beat.

A dynamic version of Blind Man's Bluff in which a guide uses only their voice to lead a blindfolded partner to tag classmates moving inside a small area.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise.
Animal Races
Students move around the space imitating different animals: bear walks, frog jumps, crab walks, and kangaroo hops, with short races between lines.
Around the World
Different areas of the playground become continents, and students travel between them using the locomotor move the teacher calls out.
Balance Pose Challenge
Students hold balance poses alone, then in pairs and small groups with a limited number of body parts touching the floor.
Balance the Pole on Your Palm
Each student tries to balance a pole upright on the palm of the hand, first standing still and then walking, switching hands and heights.
