Dual-Task Tennis Ball Activation
A partner warm-up that combines movement and leg exercises with tossing and catching tennis balls while solving a mental task. It warms up the body and divided attention, a key ability in sports where players must make decisions on the move.
How to play
- Pairs about 10 feet apart with two tennis balls. Minutes 0-2: each student dribbles a ball while jogging around their partner, switching hands every 4 bounces.
- Minutes 2-4: facing each other, pass both balls at the same time, one in the air and one with a bounce, while both do slow squats.
- Minutes 4-6: one student does alternating lunges while catching and returning the ball; the partner gives a simple math problem (for example, 7 times 6) to answer before throwing back.
- Minutes 6-8: side shuffle about 5 yards and back while passing, taking turns naming words in a category (sports, state capitals) without repeating.
- Minute 8-9: final challenge, 30 passes in a row with two balls at once without a drop.
Rules
- Toss at chest height and make it easy to catch.
- If a ball drops, pick it up and keep going without losing the mental task.
- Each pair stays in its own space so balls do not roll into others.
Variations
Easier
One ball and a simple mental task, such as counting by twos.
Standard
Two balls, leg exercises, and varied mental tasks.
Harder
Catch only with the non-dominant hand and change the mental task every 20 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do it seated, passing and bouncing from the wheelchair with the same mental task.
- Visual impairment: use a larger ball with a bell and always pass with a bounce.
- Autism: show the mental tasks on a card ahead of time.
Learning goals
- Warm up the body by combining motor and cognitive tasks.
- Improve divided attention while moving.
- Coordinate tossing and catching with leg exercises.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tennis balls: 26
Teacher tip
If students freeze with both tasks, lower the motor difficulty first, not the mental one. This works especially well before team or racket sports.
