Diamond Flock: Unison with No Fixed Leader
Groups of four in a diamond move together, copying whoever is in front; when the group turns, the leader changes. It warms up the body and trains the peripheral awareness every unison needs.

How to play
- Diamonds of four all facing the same wall. The person in front offers simple steps, arm moves and level changes, and the others copy (2 min).
- Quarter turn: the leader turns 90 degrees and whoever is now in front takes over without stopping (3 min).
- Pick up the pace: with faster music, add traveling, soft jumps and level changes. Each leader keeps it for at least 8 counts (3 min).
- Two diamonds merge into one group of eight and try to keep the unison; they share what helped them stay together (2 min).
Rules
- Leaders offer moves everyone can follow; no sharp spins or high jumps.
- Leaders change only by turning the group, never by talking.
- Keep at least an arm's length from other diamonds.
- If someone gets lost, the group slows down until they catch up.
Variations
Easier
Trios in a line with a fixed leader who changes every 30 s on the teacher's call.
Standard
Diamonds of four, changing leaders by turning.
Harder
Diamonds of eight with wide traveling and drops to floor level.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: stay at the back, lightly touching a partner's shoulder, and get short verbal cues.
- Limited mobility or wheelchair users: the diamond focuses on arms, torso and pathways; when they lead, the group copies their path.
- Anxious students: start on a side spot so they never lead first.
Learning goals
- Raise body temperature with traveling and level changes.
- Build peripheral vision and group awareness.
- Give and take leadership without words.

Teacher tip
Use instrumental music around 110-120 bpm; lyrics pull focus. The usual mistake is a leader making moves too complicated: remind them a good leader makes the group look like one body.
