Day at the Beach Movement Story
The class spends a day at the beach: they cross the hot sand, jump the waves, swim, walk like crabs and build a sandcastle. It warms up the whole body with travel, jumps and arm movements.
How to play
- Everyone spreads out. Put on sunscreen by rubbing arms, legs, belly and back (30 sec).
- Hot sand: super-quick tiptoe steps across the court to the shoreline (1 min).
- Waves: in a line facing the ocean, jump each wave the teacher calls: "Small" a little hop, "Big" a jump with arms up (1 min).
- Swim: walk through the imaginary water doing breaststroke and freestyle arms, then flutter kicks sitting down (1 min 30 sec).
- Crabs: side-shuffle in a squat with hands as pincers, one way and back (1 min).
- Sandcastle: dig with squats, pile up sand and finish by forming one big castle together with arms up (1 min).
Rules
- Jump in place without pushing the person next to you.
- On the hot sand, everyone goes the same direction.
- Crabs don't pinch anyone.
- When the teacher calls "Lifeguard!", everyone stops and listens.
Variations
Easier
Make all the waves small and swim standing up.
Standard
Tell the whole beach day with all five scenes.
Harder
On "Jellyfish!", switch scenes without stopping.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: jumps the waves with the arms and swims seated.
- Autism: preview the order of scenes and give a heads-up before big jumps.
- Fitness level: students who want more challenge do giant waves with tuck jumps.
Learning goals
- Warm up the whole body through familiar actions.
- Combine jumps and travel following cues.
- Express everyday situations with the body.
Teacher tip
It's perfect for the first day back after summer break: ask what they did and add their ideas. Do the moves with them so nobody stands still.
