Cucú Frog Song Circle Hops
A traditional Spanish circle song, “Cucú cantaba la rana”: the group circles while singing, and on every “cucú” everyone squats and hops like a frog. Kids work on rhythm, two-foot jumping, and singing games as a group.
How to play
- Children stand in a circle holding hands. Sing the song once while everyone listens and pats the beat on their legs (1 min).
- Say: “We walk around holding hands, and when you hear cucú, we let go, squat like frogs, and jump.”
- First round sung slowly: exaggerate the “cucú” and jump first so they see it (1 min).
- Second and third rounds a little faster, switching direction each time (2 min).
- Last round: on each “cucú” the frogs hop a little toward the center; at the end they hop backward to open the big circle again (1 min).
Rules
- Let go of hands before you jump.
- Jump with two feet and land with soft knees.
- Walk around the circle, no pulling arms.
- Everybody sings; nobody is left out.
Variations
Easier
No circling: the circle stays put and kids just squat and jump in place.
Standard
Walk the circle and jump on each “cucú.”
Harder
Circle with side steps and do two frog jumps on each “cucú.”
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: on “cucú” the child raises both arms or claps loudly; a classmate can push the wheelchair around the circle if wanted.
- Hearing loss or autism: make a frog hand sign right before “cucú” to signal the jump ahead of time.
- More skilled kids jump with a turn; less skilled kids squat and stand up without jumping.
Learning goals
- Move in a circle to the beat of a folk song.
- Jump with two feet and land softly.
- Enjoy a traditional singing game as a group.
Teacher tip
Sing clearly and stretch out the pause before “cucú”: kids love the wait and it sharpens attention. If the circle falls apart, stop and rebuild it before going on.
