Cross Tag (Cut the Thread)
A tag game where the tagger must switch targets every time another player runs between the tagger and the person being chased, cutting the thread. It warms up the body gradually and builds attention, dodging, and teamwork.
How to play
- Mark a rectangle about 65 × 50 ft with 4 cones. Pick two taggers in pinnies; everyone else spreads out inside the area.
- Start with 1 minute of easy jogging around the area, rolling ankles, knees, and arms on the move to get warm.
- On the whistle, each tagger calls out the name of the student they are chasing and may only tag that student.
- If another player runs between the tagger and the target, the thread is cut: the tagger must now chase the player who crossed and call out their name.
- A tagged student puts on the pinnie and becomes the new tagger; the old tagger joins the runners. Play 2-minute rounds.
- Between rounds, walk for 30 seconds while circling shoulders and hips. In the last round, add a third tagger to raise the intensity.
Rules
- Tag with a hand on the shoulders or back only, with no pushing or grabbing clothes.
- Leaving the coned area to escape is not allowed.
- To cut the thread you must actually cross the line between the two players, not just get close.
- Always look ahead when crossing so you don't run into anyone.
Variations
Easier
Play at a fast walk with only one tagger so students clearly understand the target switch.
Standard
Two taggers in a 65 × 50 ft area with 2-minute rounds.
Harder
Shrink the area and add a third tagger, or require everyone to move using side shuffles only.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair tags with a pool noodle and cuts the thread by rolling between the two players.
- Autism or shyness: the tagger may point instead of calling a name, and the role change is shown in a demo before the game starts.
- Fitness level: anyone who needs a break steps to the sideline, walks for 20 seconds, and rejoins with no penalty.
Learning goals
- Raise heart rate gradually before the main part of the lesson.
- Decide quickly when to cross to help a classmate who is being chased.
- Keep focus on a changing target while dodging.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 4
- pinnies: 3
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is the tagger sticking with the first target after the thread is cut; pause the game for a few seconds in round one and remind them. Praise students out loud when they cut the thread to save someone.

Active Blind Man's Bluff
A dynamic version of Blind Man's Bluff in which a guide uses only their voice to lead a blindfolded partner to tag classmates moving inside a small area.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise.
Animal Races
Students move around the space imitating different animals: bear walks, frog jumps, crab walks, and kangaroo hops, with short races between lines.
Around the World
Different areas of the playground become continents, and students travel between them using the locomotor move the teacher calls out.
Balance Pose Challenge
Students hold balance poses alone, then in pairs and small groups with a limited number of body parts touching the floor.
Balance the Pole on Your Palm
Each student tries to balance a pole upright on the palm of the hand, first standing still and then walking, switching hands and heights.
