Cotton Ball Steps in the Library
Children step into a pretend library where everyone is reading and walk with cotton ball steps: on tiptoe, very slowly and breathing calmly. It works on slow, controlled walking to lower the heart rate and relax.
How to play
- Whispering, the teacher explains we're going into a library where people are reading (1 min).
- We walk on tiptoe, very slowly, as if our feet were cotton balls (1 min).
- Every time the teacher opens their hands, we stop, breathe in through the nose and breathe out slowly (1 min).
- We look for a pretend book on a high shelf, stretching up on tiptoe, and another on a low shelf, crouching down (1 min).
- We sit in a corner and read our pretend book quietly, with our back against something (2 min).
Rules
- In the library, we walk on tiptoe.
- We only talk in whispers.
- When the hands open, we breathe.
- Every reader finds their own corner.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher leads and they follow in a line like tiptoeing ducklings.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, they walk freely around the room on tiptoe and stop on the signal.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, they silently count five cotton ball steps between each breath.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: they move very slowly in their wheelchair or "walk" their fingers along their legs.
- Hearing impairment: opening hands is the signal; everything else is shown.
- Autism: their reading corner can be a fixed, quiet spot with their own cushion.
Learning goals
- Walk slowly on tiptoe with control.
- Calm down after activity.
- Link slow breathing with feeling calm.
Teacher tip
Lowering your voice is the most contagious calm there is, so whisper from the very start. If someone runs, don't scold; just walk next to them with cotton ball steps.
