Cops and Robbers with Jailbreak
A team tag game where the cops try to send the robbers to jail and the free robbers can break their teammates out. Intensity builds bit by bit while students work on speed, strategy, and following the rules.
How to play
- Mark a 10 × 10 ft jail with 4 cones in one corner of the court. Split the class into two teams: cops in pinnies and robbers without.
- Warm up for 2 minutes first: jog around the court and, on the signal, do 10 seconds of arm, hip, or ankle circles.
- On the whistle, the cops chase; a tagged robber walks to jail and does easy skipping in place while waiting.
- A free robber may run into the jail and high-five a prisoner: both are free. Cops may not go into the jail.
- Each round lasts 2 minutes. Count how many robbers are in jail at the end, then switch roles.
- Play 3 rounds. In the last one, each robber may rescue only one teammate per round, which forces them to cooperate.
Rules
- Tag with a touch on the back or shoulder, with no grabbing or pushing.
- Cops must stay more than 6 ft from the jail; no guarding right next to it.
- A prisoner gets out only when a teammate high-fives them inside the jail.
- Always run inside the court and away from goals and basketball hoops.
Variations
Easier
Play with four cops against the rest of the class and 90-second rounds.
Standard
Two equal teams, the jail in one corner, and 2-minute rounds.
Harder
Prisoners hold hands in a chain stretching out from the jail, and one touch on the last prisoner frees them all.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can be a roaming cop with a pool noodle, or a robber with a personal 3-ft safe zone.
- Shyness: pair up robbers who rescue each other together so no one is left alone in jail.
- Fitness level: a student who is very tired can be the jail referee for one round and count rescues.
Learning goals
- Reach a moderate-to-high intensity gradually.
- Plan as a team how to rescue teammates in jail.
- Follow the jail and contact rules during play.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pinnies: 13
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
If cops start guarding the jail instead of chasing, mark the 6-ft distance with poly spots. Quick role changes keep anyone from standing around for too long.

Active Blind Man's Bluff
A dynamic version of Blind Man's Bluff in which a guide uses only their voice to lead a blindfolded partner to tag classmates moving inside a small area.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise.
Animal Races
Students move around the space imitating different animals: bear walks, frog jumps, crab walks, and kangaroo hops, with short races between lines.
Around the World
Different areas of the playground become continents, and students travel between them using the locomotor move the teacher calls out.
Balance Pose Challenge
Students hold balance poses alone, then in pairs and small groups with a limited number of body parts touching the floor.
Balance the Pole on Your Palm
Each student tries to balance a pole upright on the palm of the hand, first standing still and then walking, switching hands and heights.
