Colorful Scarf Shower
The teacher tosses a handful of colored scarves into the air, each child catches or picks up one and does that color's move: red jumps, blue spins, yellow jogs, green crawls. It warms up the body with different ways of moving and works on attention to a color cue.
How to play
- In a circle, the teacher shows each color and its move: red jumps, blue spins, yellow jogs, green crawls (1 min).
- The teacher tosses the scarves into the air in the middle: “Rain shower!”; each child grabs one, from the air or the ground (1 min).
- Everyone checks their color and does its move around the playground until the teacher says “Cloud!” (1 min).
- Give the scarves back to the teacher, who tosses them again, and we get a new color (2 min).
- Last shower: we all drop our scarves in a pile and walk slowly around it (1 min).
Rules
- Grab just one scarf, the closest one.
- If two children grab the same one, the one who got there second lets go and finds another.
- Do your color's move until you hear “Cloud!”
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just two colors (red jumps, blue walks), and the teacher hands out scarves if needed.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, four colors with four moves.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, at “Swap!” find someone with a different color, trade scarves and do the new move.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the teacher tosses a scarf close by, and the moves are with the arms (red up high, blue windmill…).
- Visual impairment: a classmate tells them their color, or scarves are knotted differently by color.
- Autism: they can stay by the teacher and take a scarf from their hand instead of the shower.
Learning goals
- Match a color to a movement.
- Practice different ways of moving.
- Catch or pick up a falling object.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pañuelos de colores: 28
Teacher tip
Toss the scarves high and spread out so they don't land in one spot and cause collisions. Post a sign with the four colors and a picture for each (jumping feet, top, sneaker, kitten) so children don't rely on memory.
