Color Twins Scarf Match
Each student tucks a colored scarf into their waistband; when the hand drum stops, they find a classmate with the same color and do the announced challenge together. Students work on social skills, attention, and a variety of locomotor movements.
How to play
- Hand out scarves in 5 colors, 5 of each; each student tucks one loosely into their waistband, without tying it, and spreads out on the blacktop (1 min).
- While the hand drum plays, students move the way the teacher calls: jog, giant steps, kangaroo hops, or side slides (30 sec).
- When the drum stops, each student finds a color twin, shakes hands, and does the challenge called out: 10 crossed claps, 5 squats together, or one lap around their partner (30 sec).
- Before moving on, each student trades scarves with someone of a different color so the twins change next round.
- Repeat the move, find, and challenge sequence 4 more times, never with the same twin (4 min).
- Final round: everyone with the same color gathers and makes the shape the teacher calls, such as a star, a train, or a circle (1 min).
Rules
- Tuck the scarf in loosely, never tied, so it pulls free if it catches.
- Walk to find your twin when the drum stops, no pushing.
- If someone is left over in a color, make a group of three.
- Do not pick the same twin two rounds in a row.
Variations
Easier
Use only 3 colors and simple challenges shown with a gesture.
Standard
Five colors, varied movements, and one partner challenge at each stop.
Harder
Find a twin of the color the teacher names, for example reds find blues.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: adapt challenges for the wheelchair (high-fives, turning together) and have the twin come to the student.
- Shyness: let the first round be with a familiar classmate and use no-contact challenges.
- Fitness level: alternate easy and vigorous movements; students who tire can do them at a walk.
Learning goals
- Interact positively with a variety of classmates.
- Identify and pair up by color quickly.
- Combine different locomotor movements to the drumbeat.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Scarves: 25
- Hand drum: 1
Teacher tip
Check that scarves are tucked into waistbands and never tied. Trading scarves between rounds is what mixes the groups, so do not skip that step.
