Color Pattern Copy Relay
In teams, students run a relay to copy a sequence of colored cones that the teacher sets out as a model. Students work on visual memory, quick decision-making, and running with starts and stops.
How to play
- Make 5 teams of 5 in lines behind a starting line; 12 yards in front of each team is a pile of 10 mixed colored cones with an open spot next to it to build their row (1 min).
- In the middle, the teacher sets out a model row of 5 cones, for example red, blue, blue, yellow, green, which students may run over to look at but not touch (1 min).
- On the signal, the first runner on each team goes to the pile, places one cone in the team's row to match the model, and runs back to high-five the next runner (2 min).
- If a runner spots a mistake in the row, they can use their turn to fix one cone instead of adding a new one; a team finishes when its row matches exactly.
- Second round: the model is shown to everyone for 10 seconds and then covered with a pinnie; each team has to rebuild it from memory (3 min).
- Third round: each team designs a 6-cone model for the team next to them and the relay is played again (3 min).
Rules
- Each runner places or fixes only one cone per turn.
- Leave only after a high-five behind the line.
- Run in your own lane and return along the side so you do not collide with the next runner.
- Nobody touches the model; if you want to check it, you have to run there.
Variations
Easier
Use a 3-cone model that stays visible and piles with only the colors needed.
Standard
Use a 5-cone model that runners can go check.
Harder
Use a 7-cone model covered after 10 seconds, or L-shaped rows where both position and color count.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: shorten the distance or give the student the team "memory" role, calling from the line which cone comes next.
- Color blindness or visual impairment: use very different colors or make cones different in size or shape as well.
- Fitness level: give faster teams a required movement on the way out (jumps, slides).
Learning goals
- Memorize and reproduce a visual sequence.
- Decide quickly whether to add or fix.
- Warm up running with short starts and stops.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Colored cones: 60
- Pinnies: 1
Teacher tip
Set up identical color piles for every team ahead of time. Reward the exact row, not just speed, so fast runners learn to look before they run.
