Color Meetups Around the Hoop
Each child dances with a colored scarf, and when the music stops they rush to gather with their color team around the hoop of that color. Children practice reacting to a signal and grouping by a rule.
How to play
- Each child picks a scarf; the teacher puts four colored hoops in the four corners of the playground (1 min).
- Music on: dance all over the playground waving the scarf up and down (1 min).
- Music stops: go to the hoop of your color and put one foot inside next to your teammates (1 min).
- At each meetup the teacher calls a group pose: hold hands around the hoop, sit on the rim, or make a flower with our arms (2 min).
- Swap scarves with a friend from another color and dance again (1 min).
- Big final meetup: all colors together around the teacher, scarves in the air (1 min).
Rules
- When the music stops, I go to my color's hoop.
- Everyone fits around the hoop: I make room for my friends.
- I walk fast, but no wild running.
- The scarf is for dancing, not for throwing.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, only two colors, and the teacher walks each group to its hoop.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, four colors and simple group poses.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the teacher moves the hoops while they dance and adds mixed meetups: "one red and one blue together."
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: high-contrast hoops and scarves, plus a buddy guide from the same color.
- Limited mobility: their group brings the hoop and meets up next to them.
- Autism: keep the same color and the same corner every time so they know where to go.
Learning goals
- React to the music stopping by moving to a set place.
- Group with others by color.
- Coordinate a pose together as a group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Colored hoops: 4
- Colored scarves: 25
- Music
Teacher tip
Choose colors everyone can tell apart (red, blue, yellow, green) and leave a matching scarf in each hoop as a reminder. At first, stop the music after short bursts so they don't get worn out.
