Color Hoop Callouts
Students move freely among hoops of four colors spread on the floor, and when the teacher calls a color they run to a hoop of that color and perform its matching action. It builds reaction time, visual discrimination and a full-body warm-up.
How to play
- Spread about 30 hoops in four colors across the gym or blacktop, at least 3 feet apart (1 min).
- Explain the actions: red, jump in and out with feet together; blue, sit inside; yellow, jog around the hoop; green, balance on one foot inside.
- Students jog between the hoops without stepping on them; when they hear a color, they go to any hoop of that color and do the action for 5 seconds (2 min).
- Up to three students can share a hoop, so nobody is ever left out.
- Change the way students travel between calls: skipping, sliding sideways, backward or like an animal (2 min).
- Finish with quick double calls of two colors in a row for students who want a challenge (2 min).
Rules
- No one is out: if you pick the wrong color, switch and keep going.
- Do not step on hoops while running, because they slide.
- Keep your eyes up while moving so you don't bump into anyone.
- On a long whistle, everyone freezes and listens.
Variations
Easier
Use only two colors with one simple action each.
Standard
Play with four colors and four actions as described.
Harder
Hold up a colored card instead of calling the color, so students react to visual cues only.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair touches the hoop with a hand or circles it, and wide lanes are kept open.
- Autism or shyness: show a card with the colors and pictured actions beforehand and always explain them in the same order.
- Fitness level: students who need less load walk between calls; those who want more do each action twice as long.
Learning goals
- React quickly to an auditory or visual signal.
- Match colors with different movement actions.
- Travel through general space while avoiding obstacles and classmates.

Teacher tip
Set the hoops out before class arrives to save time. Call colors slowly at first and say the action out loud until students have it memorized.

Active Blind Man's Bluff
A dynamic version of Blind Man's Bluff in which a guide uses only their voice to lead a blindfolded partner to tag classmates moving inside a small area.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise.
Animal Races
Students move around the space imitating different animals: bear walks, frog jumps, crab walks, and kangaroo hops, with short races between lines.
Around the World
Different areas of the playground become continents, and students travel between them using the locomotor move the teacher calls out.
Balance Pose Challenge
Students hold balance poses alone, then in pairs and small groups with a limited number of body parts touching the floor.
Balance the Pole on Your Palm
Each student tries to balance a pole upright on the palm of the hand, first standing still and then walking, switching hands and heights.
