Circus Parade Partner Movement Story
The circus comes to town and parades down the street: in pairs, one is the performer who leads and the other copies their tightrope, juggling or strongman moves. It builds imitation skills, body expression and a cooperative warm-up.
How to play
- Pairs spread out on the blacktop, one behind the other: the front one is the performer and the back one is the apprentice. The teacher announces like a ringmaster that the circus is in town (30 sec).
- Circus horses: the performer jogs with high knees and the apprentice follows, matching the rhythm; on a clap they switch roles (1 min).
- Tightrope walkers: walk along a court line with arms out and stop on one foot every few steps; the apprentice copies the exact pose (1 min 30 sec).
- Jugglers: toss and catch imaginary balls while walking, faster and faster, and the apprentice copies; then switch roles (1 min).
- Strongmen: lift huge imaginary weights with a squat and press overhead, 8 reps each, while the partner counts out loud (1 min).
- Clowns: the performer makes up a funny walk for 20 seconds and the apprentice copies it; switch twice (1 min 30 sec).
- Grand finale: every pair takes a bow to the audience and the whole group claps (30 sec).
Rules
- The apprentice copies and doesn't pass the performer.
- Funny moves can't bother or touch other pairs.
- On the tightrope, if someone is already on a line, find another.
- Both partners spend the same time in each role.
Variations
Easier
The teacher is the performer for the whole class and students only copy.
Standard
Run the parade in pairs, switching roles in every act.
Harder
The apprentice must copy with the opposite side, like a mirror.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: leads as the performer with arms and trunk and the partner adapts the travel; in a wheelchair, balance acts use imaginary objects in the hand.
- Autism or shyness: always starts as the apprentice and may repeat the teacher's moves if no idea comes.
- Fitness level: students who want more intensity do the horses at a fast jog and the strongman with a jump.
Learning goals
- Copy a partner's movements accurately.
- Create expressive movements based on a character.
- Take turns as leader and follower.
Teacher tip
Let students pair with friends the first time so they loosen up. Give a few sample clown walks so shy students have ideas to borrow.
