Caterpillar to Butterfly Story
Students act out a caterpillar's transformation: crawling slowly, eating leaves, wrapping up in a cocoon to rest, and coming out as a gently flying butterfly. It builds creative movement, slow controlled motion, and relaxation.
How to play
- Spread out the mats; each student lies face down on one like a tiny caterpillar (30 sec).
- "The caterpillar crawls": students inch forward very slowly on their mat by scrunching and stretching their bodies, staying on the mat (1 min).
- "The caterpillar eats leaves": sitting up, they reach for imaginary leaves, stretching their arms forward, up, and to the sides (90 sec).
- "The cocoon": they lie on their sides hugging their knees with eyes closed; for 90 seconds they breathe slowly while you narrate that their bodies are changing inside.
- "The butterfly hatches": they slowly stretch out one arm, then the other, sit up, and spread their wings (1 min).
- "The butterfly flies": they tiptoe between the mats moving their arms like slow wings, then land on a flower by sitting on their mat and taking three breaths (90 sec).
Rules
- Each caterpillar stays on its mat until the butterfly hatches.
- Everything moves in slow motion and without talking.
- Butterflies fly without touching each other or stepping on other mats.
- Get up from the cocoon slowly, using your hands.
Variations
Easier
Skip the final flight and end with the butterfly spreading its wings while seated.
Standard
All five scenes from caterpillar to flying butterfly.
Harder
Each butterfly secretly copies another butterfly's rhythm for 30 seconds without that student knowing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student acts out the caterpillar and butterfly with arms and trunk from a wheelchair.
- Visual impairment: the student flies holding the arm of a butterfly partner.
- Autism: preview the stages with pictures of the life cycle and always keep the same order.
Learning goals
- Act out a transformation process with the body.
- Gradually control the speed of movement.
- Enjoy a moment of relaxation curled up on their side.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 25
Teacher tip
The cocoon stage is the key, so stretch it out if the group is wound up. It ties in nicely with what students learn about life cycles in science.

Back Drawing with Partner
In pairs, one student slowly draws a shape, letter or number on a partner's back with a finger, and the partner guesses it before roles switch.
