Cartons Tiptoe Back to the Fridge
Children carry a juice carton on the palm or back of the hand, walking very slowly as if it were milk that mustn't wake up, and stand it in the fridge, a big box. It builds slow, controlled movement and turns cleanup into a calm routine.
How to play
- Each child picks up a carton and sets it on their open palm (1 min).
- With soft music on, walk slowly with the carton on the palm, then move it to the back of the hand (1 min).
- Carry it on the forearm, very slowly and on tiptoe, so the milk doesn't wake up (1 min).
- One at a time and without rushing, stand the carton up in the fridge without a sound (2 min).
- Close the fridge, sit around it, and whisper which game you liked best (1 min).
Rules
- I walk slowly.
- If it falls, I pick it up without rushing.
- In the fridge I stand it up quietly.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, carry the carton with both hands like a tray.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, carry it on the palm and the back of one hand.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, add the forearm and sort cartons in the fridge: milk cartons together, juice cartons together.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child holds the carton on the lap or palm while a buddy pushes the wheelchair to the fridge.
- Visual impairment: the teacher taps softly on the box so the child can find the fridge by sound.
- Autism: give the child the steady job of closing the fridge at the end, so they know when the game is over.
Learning goals
- Bring energy down at the end of the session.
- Control slow movement while carrying an object.
- Put materials away in an orderly way.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Empty juice cartons: 25
- Large cardboard box: 1
- Music
Teacher tip
This is a calm way to collect the cartons after a session that used them. If someone runs, don't scold: "Oh no, the milk is dizzy! Can we carry it slower?"
