Car Wash Ball Massage
Students form two facing lines that act as a car wash; one by one, each child walks through very slowly while classmates gently roll foam balls over their back and arms. It promotes relaxation, respectful touch and trust within the group.
How to play
- Split the class into 3 groups of 8-9; in each group make two facing lines about 3 feet apart, and give everyone in the lines a foam ball (1 min).
- Explain the three car wash steps: "soap" (gentle circles with the ball), "rinse" (long strokes from top to bottom) and "dry" (very light taps).
- The first "car" enters the wash walking very slowly, arms slightly away from the body, with eyes open or closed, whichever they prefer.
- Students in the lines roll the ball only on the back, shoulders and arms, following the step the teacher calls out; each trip takes about 20 seconds.
- When the car exits, it joins the end of a line and the next car goes; keep rotating until every student has been through the wash (5 min).
- To finish, everyone sets the ball down and takes two deep breaths while reaching both arms overhead (1 min).
Rules
- The ball never touches the head, face or neck.
- Pressure is always gentle; if someone says "softer," respect it right away.
- The car walks slowly through the wash with no running or pushing.
- Work in silence or with very quiet voices.
Variations
Easier
The wash only does the "soap" circles, and younger students walk through with eyes open.
Standard
The teacher calls out all three wash steps while each car moves through.
Harder
A student becomes the car wash manager and leads the steps for the group using calm words.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student rolls through in a wheelchair while classmates work on shoulders and arms.
- Touch sensitivity or autism: the student may choose to be part of the wash only, or ask for arm touches only.
- Energy level: with a very wound-up class, shrink each wash to 4 students so waiting time is minimal.
Learning goals
- Relax the back and arm muscles after exercise.
- Practice respectful touch and ask for what you need.
- Build trust within the group.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Demonstrate with yourself as the car so students see the right pressure. Ask beforehand if anyone would rather not be touched and offer them the role of car wash manager.
