Canarian Wrestler Activation: Grip, Base and Gentle Pushes
A specific warm-up before an adapted Canarian wrestling session: it builds grip strength, activates the hips and practices a low base. It prepares the body for controlled contact and lowers injury risk.

How to play
- Joint mobility for neck, shoulders, hips and knees in a circle, led by a student (2 min).
- Towel grip: in pairs, each holds one end of a rolled towel, the way Canarian wrestlers grip the rolled pant leg, and hold tension for 10 s; four reps per hand (3 min).
- Low base: feet apart and knees bent, the partner gently pushes on shoulders and hips from different directions while the other keeps balance (3 min).
- Soft falls: from the knees, roll sideways onto the mat protecting the head; six per side (2 min).
Rules
- Pushes build up gradually and stop when someone says 'stop'.
- No sudden yanks on the towel.
- Falls only on mats, chin tucked.
- Short nails, no rings or bracelets.
Variations
Easier
Solo towel grip, wringing it between the hands, and front pushes only.
Standard
Partner grip and pushes from four directions.
Harder
The pusher changes direction without warning and the other must reset their base in under a second.
Adaptations
- Wrist injury: grip with the healthy hand or squeeze a soft ball instead.
- Limited mobility: do grips and pushes seated on a bench, working on trunk stability.
- Uneasy with contact: pick a trusted partner and start with palm pushes on the shoulder.
Learning goals
- Activate grip and hip muscles.
- Learn to hold a stable base against pushes.
- Practice safe falls before wrestling work.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 15
- towels: 15
Teacher tip
Students bring towels from home; remind them the day before. Push the mats together into one block so they don't slide apart during falls.
