Call Room Countdown: Personal Meet Warm-Up
Each student builds their own warm-up backward from a mock call-room time, like at a real track meet. They learn to pace it and arrive at their event activated but not tired.

How to play
- Quick explanation: at meets there's a call room before each event, and your warm-up ends before it. Everyone picks their event for the day and fills in the card in blocks (2 min).
- General block: jog and mobility from the card, with the teacher calling out the time left until the call (3 min).
- Specific block: technique drills for the chosen event in the cone area set up for each event group (3 min).
- Activation block: two or three short efforts at race pace (2 min).
- The call: everyone reports to the call room (cone area) and rates how they feel from 1 to 10 and what they'd change (2 min).
Rules
- At a real meet, if you're late to the call room you don't compete: being on time matters.
- Keep the activation block short; don't wear yourself out before the event.
- Each event group stays in its own area.
- If something hurts, stop and tell the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Card with the drills already written; students just put them in order.
Standard
Blank card with three blocks for each student to fill in.
Harder
Add a surprise two-minute delay and everyone must adjust their plan.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: large-print card or a voice memo on the phone.
- Limited mobility: blocks built around upper-body work and seated throwing technique.
- Competition nerves: add a short focus routine in the last block.
Learning goals
- Plan your own timed warm-up.
- Pace your effort to arrive ready for the event.
- See punctuality and routine as part of performance.
Equipment for a class of 25
- stopwatch: 1
- planning cards: 30
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Print the cards on half sheets and keep them: they're handy for the end-of-unit meet. The usual mistake is spending half the time jogging: make them split all three blocks.
