Build-Up Strides in Lanes
A warm-up before races or speed-based sports where, after an easy jog, students run 40-yard build-ups, speeding up through cone-marked sections until they reach near-top speed. It gets the body ready for fast efforts with low injury risk.
How to play
- Mark 5 lanes of 40 yards with cones every 10 yards (four sections). Groups of 5 students per lane.
- Minutes 0-3: easy jog down and back along the lanes plus dynamic mobility for hips, knees, and ankles.
- Minutes 3-5: two runs at a brisk jog, focusing on posture: tall trunk, arms at 90 degrees, and feet landing under the hips.
- Minutes 5-9: four build-ups: first section at 50 percent, second at 70, third at 85, and last at 90-95 percent, slowing down gradually after the last cone. Walk back along the side.
- The next runner in the lane starts when the previous one passes the second cone.
- Minutes 9-10: walk it out, shake out the legs, and share which section felt most comfortable.
Rules
- No one runs a build-up at 100 percent: the final section is near-max, never an all-out sprint.
- Slow down over the 10-15 yards after the last cone, which must be clear.
- Stay in your own lane without drifting.
- If you feel a twinge or pull, slow to a walk and tell the teacher.
Variations
Easier
30-yard lanes with three sections and a top speed of 80 percent.
Standard
Four 40-yard build-ups from 50 to 90-95 percent.
Harder
Start from a three-point stance and use a quicker stride rate in the last section.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student in a wheelchair does the build-ups by pushing along a smooth lane with the same sections.
- Visual impairment: the student runs with a guide connected by a tether in the hand, in a lane clear of obstacles.
- Lower fitness: do two build-ups and replace the other two with a brisk jog.
Learning goals
- Prepare the body for speed efforts gradually.
- Keep proper running form as speed increases.
- Apply injury-prevention habits before running fast.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 25
Teacher tip
This warm-up is ideal before a speed test or a game. The usual mistake is starting the first section too fast; call out or clap the pace changes during the first runs.
