Blindfolded Texture Walk
In pairs, a blindfolded student is slowly guided by a partner to several stations, where they touch different textures and try to guess what they are. It builds trust, sense of touch, and responsibility for taking care of someone else.
How to play
- Ahead of time, set up 6 stations on benches or tables at waist height, each with one texture (sponge, fabric, rough cardboard, spiky sensory ball, fine sandpaper, yarn).
- Make pairs: one wears a blindfold and the other is the guide, holding their partner's elbow and walking slowly (1 min).
- The guide takes their partner to 3 stations; at each one they place their partner's hands on the texture and let them explore it silently for 20 seconds (3 min).
- Afterward, the blindfolded student takes it off and tells the guide what they think they touched; the guide confirms or gives a hint (30 sec).
- Switch roles and visit the other 3 stations (3.5 min).
- Circle closing: each pair shares which texture felt nicest and how it felt to be guided (1 min).
Rules
- The guide always walks at their partner's pace and quietly warns about turns and stops.
- Never let go of a blindfolded partner.
- No naming the textures until the blindfold comes off.
- Pairs keep space from other pairs to avoid bumping.
Variations
Easier
The blindfolded student may lift the blindfold briefly at each station to check.
Standard
Three stations per role, elbow guiding, and guessing at the end.
Harder
The guide may only use their voice, no touching, and the partner must rank the textures from softest to roughest.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the guide pushes the wheelchair slowly or places the textures in the partner's lap.
- Visual impairment: the student can be a great guide and share the strategies they use to recognize textures.
- Autism or fear of the dark: the student can simply close their eyes and open them whenever needed, or choose to be a guide only.
Learning goals
- Trust a partner to move around without seeing.
- Recognize objects and materials by touch.
- Take responsibility for guiding and caring for someone else.

Teacher tip
Set up the stations before class and clear any obstacles from the path. Check that no texture has sharp edges or could irritate the skin.
