BEEF Form Shooting Ladder from the Rim
One-handed shooting warm-up very close to the rim to lock in BEEF mechanics (balance, eyes, elbow, follow-through) before moving out. It activates the wrist and legs without fatigue and with a high make rate.
How to play
- Go over BEEF out loud: feet shoulder-width apart (Balance), eyes locked on the rim (Eyes), elbow under the ball and lined up with the basket (Elbow), and gooseneck wrist at the finish (Follow-through) (2 min).
- In pairs at each basket, shoot one-handed from 1 m (3 ft) in front of the rim with no guide hand; the partner rebounds and passes back (2 min).
- Ladder: after three makes in a row move back to the 2-meter cone, then the 3-meter cone; miss two in a row and drop back one cone (3 min).
- Add the guide hand and shoot from the farthest cone reached, switching sides with your partner every five shots (3 min).
Rules
- During the one-handed phase, the other hand stays behind your back.
- Hold the follow-through until the ball hits the rim or the net.
- The rebounder waits outside the shooting line so no one gets hit by the ball.
- Each pair uses its own basket or its own side of the backboard.
Variations
Easier
Shoot at a youth basket or stay at 1 m the whole time.
Standard
Ladder at 1, 2 and 3 m with three makes to move up and two misses to move down.
Harder
A shot only counts as a make if it goes in without touching the rim.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: shoots from the chair with the same ladder, at a lowered basket if one is available.
- Visual impairment: the partner claps under the rim as a sound cue before each shot.
- Shooting wrist injury: practices with the weak hand at 1 m or serves as the BEEF observer.
Learning goals
- Recognize and apply the four elements of BEEF mechanics.
- Prepare wrists, elbows and legs for the shooting work in the lesson.
- Self-regulate shooting distance based on your own makes.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 15
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Walk the baskets and focus on fixing the flared elbow, the most common mistake. Have students say out loud which letter broke down after every miss.
